Developing your AI Portfolio

I've been to 4 AI conferences around the USA over the past 6 months. I needed to get off the screen and talk to leaders, face-to-face.

I've been able to have discussions with numerous MedTech CTOs, VPs, and senior staff who are directing their company's AI strategy.

My conference circuit: Cleveland, Austin, New York, Vegas

Here are the AI use-cases I have seen time and time again:

*As of writing, I am not affiliated with any of these companies.

Quick Wins (3-6 months)

  1. "Talk to" GPT. Interact with and ask questions to a large or complex document.

    • ChatGPT does a fantastic job. Using Enterprise license or a custom GPT through OpenAI API.

    • Think 13485 or other ISO standards, Europe's AI Act, Medical Device Files (MDF).

  2. Summarize clinical trial or patient data

    • Doximity

    • CompliantChatGPT

    • ChatGPT is NOT HIPAA compliant. Copilot, Claude, Gemini can be with some extra setup, but not out of the box.

  3. Meeting note-takers and recorders

    • Otter.AI, Fireflies

    • Personally, I dislike these tools. People will send their "Otter" instead of going to meetings. It feels impersonal and I've noticed employees are less likely to speak up because the meeting is being recorded. However, they do a great job summarizing meetings and action items.

Long-Term Projects (6+ months)

  1. Streamline Regulatory & Internal Compliance

    • New guidance amendment? No problem. Some companies (J&J) are building internal tools that can crosscheck DFUs, design V&V docs, RoHS/REACH, and also automatically manage postmarket surveillance.

  2. QMS Improvement

    • Audit support assistant, streamline CAPA/NC review.

    • I've seen a couple tools built internally, but myQMS is a great off the shelf option.

  3. Supply Chain Management

Quick wins demonstrate immediate value and build internal support.

Long-term projects are your meat & potatoes, your competitive advantage.

This is where you want to use pilot programs and real frameworks to govern and steer the outcome, similar to a large software implementation.
